Groups

What are they

Groups are sorting containers for Assets that ensure ease of use for organizations with extensive Asset ecosystems. Groups can contain any number of Assets, and Assets can belong to any number of Groups. In the List Panel, Groups display as top level folders with Assets inside of them.

Group Fields

Groups are Static elements, and their properties are related to their functionality as containers.

Main

  • Name: of the Group to display in the List Panel and other features in the portal that reference Groups.
  • Color: users can Assign a color to the Group that can be used to quickly identify it in a long list of Groups
  • Parent: the portal supports nested Groups, allowing users to create sub-groups for better sorting and filtering. Parent Group must be an existing Group, and is therefore a drop-down menu of the list of Groups in the portal.
  • Message Destination ID: Users can assign an ID to a Group or Subgroup, and this ID can be used to message assets in that Group directly from other assets in the field. The portal routes the messages that it receives from the Asset and sends it automatically to all assets in the Group. For example, if the Group ID is FL, users will be able to send a message from their Asset to the portal that says “FL:Ready to move” and “Ready to move” will be sent as a text message to all Assets in the FL Group.

Users

Lists the users that have access to view and interact with the Group, can be toggled to enable/disable

Assets

Groups in the List Panel

Groups are dynamic container objects, meaning they have a number of visible properties in the List Panel that are dictated by the individual Assets in the group.

Notifications

In the List Panel, Groups are primarily containers, but they do support high-level notification summaries. Notification Boxes appear under the name of Groups just as they do with individual Assets, and the indicators will be lit if any of the Assets in the Group have at least one notification of that type.

Reordering

Groups can be dragged and dropped to reorder them in a way not provided by the Sorting Options in the Quick Actions Menu. Additionally, Asset visibility can be toggled at the Group level, which affects all Assets in the Group. This is a quick way to declutter the Map View when there are large numbers of Assets in an ecosystem.

Icons and Buttons

The Folder Icon next to each Asset Group tells the user how many Assets are in the group, and can be clicked to toggle the list of Assets in the Group to be expanded or collapsed.

The Visibility Toggle at the Group level is both a dynamic toggle and a clickable toggle. If toggled manually, it will behave the same way all Visibility toggles behave. If not toggled manually, it will reflect the nature of the Assets in the Group, and display as either fully visible, partially visible, or fully invisible.

The multicog icon opens the Group Options in the details panel.

Groups in the Details Panel

Clicking the Cog Button on any Asset Group will open the Group Options in the Details Panel. From here, users can take actions that affect all Assets in the Group, including messaging them all at once, or viewing all Notification Details of each type for all of the Assets.

At the top of the panel, users will find navigational options as well. The name of the selected Group will appear in a drop-down menu, which allows users to jump between Groups. Left and Right arrows also allow users to move between Groups in the order in which they appear in the List Panel.

Goup Options

Other tabs in the Details Panel are for viewing the expanded versions of each Notification type, and allowing users to interact with those Notifications. For more information, see the article on Notifications.
